エイブラハム・リンカーン●Abraham Lincoln
1809年、アメリカ・ケンタッキー州生まれ。第16代アメリカ合衆国大統領。初の共和党出身大統領であり、奴隷解放の父とも呼ばれる。65年に暗殺される。
▼演説内容
奴隷制を支持するアメリカ南部の州が合衆国を脱退し、連合国を結成。両者の対立で起きた南北戦争。この演説は、戦争中の1863年11月19日に、ゲティスバーグ国立戦没者墓地ができるにあたり、開所式でリンカーンが行ったもの。

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

87年前、我々の父祖は、この大陸に新しい国家を誕生させた。それは自由という理念のもとに生まれ、すべての人々は平等につくられているという信条に捧げられた国家である。

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

今、我々は大きな内戦を戦っている。この国だけでなく、同じように自由を抱いて誕生し、同じような信条に基づいてつくられた国家が長く続くことができるかどうか試されている。我々はこの戦争の激戦地に集結している。我々は国家を存続させるためにこの地に命を捧げた人たちの最後の安住の地として、この地の一部を捧げるためにここに集まっている。我々がそうすることは、全く適切で正当な行為である。

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate-we cannot consecrate-we cannot hallow-this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. .e world will little note,nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

しかし、より大きな意味では、我々がこの地を捧げたり、神聖化したり、清めることはできない。生死にかかわらず、この地で戦った勇敢な人々こそが、この地を聖地にした。我々の取るに足らない力では、価値を加えることも減らすことも遠く及ばない。ここで我々が述べることに世界はほとんど注目しないし、長く記憶されることもないだろう。しかし、勇敢な人々がここで成し遂げたことは、決して忘れ去られることはない。ここで戦った人たちが気高く推進してきた未完の作業に、ここで献身するのは、まさしく生きている我々である。我々の前に残された大いなる責務に身を捧げるのは、まさに我々なのである。その責務とは、ここで名誉の死を遂げた人たちが死力を尽くして献身した大義のために、我々もさらなる献身をすることであり、我々が、名誉の死を遂げた人たちの死を無駄にしないとここで固く誓うことであり、神のもとに、この国家に新たな自由を誕生させることであり、そして人民の、人民による、人民のための政府が、地上から消えてなくならないようにすることなのである。
